European Union, 26 November 2019 – Industry4Europe, a coalition of 149 sector Associations representing the diversity of the EU’s industrial base, today published its new Joint Paper ‘A long-term strategy for Europe’s industrial future: from words to action’. Through cross-sectoral recommendations, the Industry4Europe coalition contributes to the future EU industrial strategy announced by European Commission President-Elect Ursula von der Leyen.
Brussels, 22 November 2019 – The EU has launched a WTO challenge against Indonesian export restrictions on the raw materials used in stainless steel production. The European Steel Association (EUROFER) welcomes the announcement by the European Commission that they are taking Indonesia to the WTO in order to protest against the distortive effects of these measures.
Brussels, 20 November 2019 – Ahead of the Foreign Affairs Council trade configuration on Thursday, the European Steel Association (EUROFER) calls on the Commission to have another go at reviewing the steel safeguard. This must defend the sector against deflected steel sent to Europe given the US’ section 232 tariffs and sustained global production overcapacity.
Brussels, 31 October 2019 – Apparent steel consumption fell by 7.7% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2019, after a drop of 1.6% in the first quarter. The negative trend in steel demand is the result of the ongoing slump in EU’s manufacturing sector due to weakened exports and investment that has become more pronounced during the second quarter of this year. Leading indicators forecast a continuation of the downturn for the remainder of the year, with no rebound before the second quarter of 2020.
Tokyo, October 31, 2019 – Sixteen steel industry associations on five continents today praised the agreement by a “large majority of members of the Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity (GFSEC)” to “continue the Forum’s work on the issue of steel excess capacity,” and called upon the few dissenting members to reconsider their current position as quickly as possible. Their comments were made at the conclusion of working group and ministerial meetings of the GFSEC in Tokyo last week.
Brussels, 22 October 2019 – The European Steel Association (EUROFER) has today issued a joint release alongside eighteen other regional and national steel associations calling for the Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity to be extended. At the same time, the crisis in the European steel industry – largely a result of the very overcapacity the Global Forum exists to fix – continues to intensify.
Nineteen steel industry associations in the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia today called for the governments of steelmaking economies to step up efforts to effectively tackle persistent global excess capacity in the steel sector, including by quickly implementing strong rules and remedies that reduce excess capacity, its impact and its causes. The industry groups emphasized that governments should use all available mechanisms and negotiation forums, including the G20 Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity, to:
