Although the EU public procurement market for goods and services is transparent and open to foreign bidders, there is growing lack of level-playing field in world procurement markets. Third countries are increasingly restricting access to their markets while their companies are winning significant contracts abroad – sometimes on unfair pricing terms or by challenging EU public procurement rules. This poses a threat to growth and employment in the EU, as it represents missed opportunities for exports but also increasingly in the domestic market.
Against this background, EUROFER calls on the European Union to take a strong stance on reciprocity and other reforms needed in the field of public procurement. This is key to support the opening of international procurement markets while guaranteeing an adequate level of protection of the EU public procurement market against non-reciprocal and/or unfair competition.
Brussels, 22 October 2024 – The steel crisis will be at the centre of the European Parliament (EP) Plenary sitting tomorrow morning in Strasbourg. Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) will debate how to tackle the dire situation facing the European steel industry and its workers, caused by global steel overcapacity, unfair trade, low demand in the manufacturing industry and high energy prices in the EU. This public discussion raises high expectations for a fit-for-purpose EU Steel Action Plan to be implemented swiftly to save the sector as the basis for EU manufacturing, underscores the European Steel Association.
Brussels, 05 September 2024 – The latest developments in the steel sector and across critical value chains are worrying signs of a steady deterioration, endangering the survival and the transition of steelmakers and their key manufacturing customers in Europe, such as automotive. A Clean Industrial Deal including swift and radical measures in EU industrial, energy and trade policies, is the last chance to ensure Europe’s prosperity and shield European industry from cheap imports driven by third countries’ unfair trade practices, overcapacity and lower climate ambition, urges the European Steel Association.
EUROFER would like to highlight its support for the International Procurement Instrument and urge the European institutions to reach an agreement in the shortest possible timeframe to ensure new market openings for European companies and a level playing field in both the EU and third countries’ markets.
