Brussels, 12 May 2020 – The COVID-19 outbreak has caused steel consumption forecasts to be slashed and the overall economic outlook downgraded. Shutdown measures implemented by governments starting from March 2020 have severely impacted manufacturing activity and steel-using industrial sectors. However, steel demand had been struggling even in 2019, as new data has shown in the European Steel Association’s (EUROFER) latest Economic and Market Outlook, published today.
EUROFER's contribution to the Commission’s inception impact assessment on the EU taxonomy for sustainable finance.
Brussels, 26 May 2020 – The European Commission will tomorrow, following the request by the European Council, present its EU Recovery Plan to support a climate-neutral, digitalised and resilient EU economy, helping to rebuild after the COVID-19 pandemic.
Brussels, 27 November 2019 – The European Steel Association (EUROFER) has today welcomed the announcement by the European Commission that it will be investigating the circumvention of anti-dumping duties by Chinese exporters of metallic coated steel. This investigation has been opened by the Commission itself, and concerns the deliberate mislabelling of large volumes of this product from China.
The European steel industry’s survival is at further, serious risk because the Commission’s steel safeguard review proposal does not consider the sharp collapse in demand following the COVID pandemic. The tariff-free quota should reflect EU steel demand. The European steel sector is deeply disappointed that the Commission and many EU governments have not yet decided to consider this.
Many European steel producers participate in the Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) data collection study for steel products.
